A person’s wedding day should be one of the most personal days of their life: an expression of who they and their future spouse are and who they plan to be as a married couple as they embark upon their future together.
Because it is so personal and so momentous, no one wants to feel that their wedding is just the same as hundreds of others. Sometimes, couples feel under pressure from relatives and friends to have the wedding that is expected of them rather than the one that they truly want. The thing to remember (and to voice to those who would like to influence your big day) is that your wedding day is a celebration of who you are individually as people and who you have decided to be collectively as a couple. If that gets forgotten then it is no longer truly your wedding day.
Here are some examples of how you can express yourself in a unique way, to ensure your wedding day is really about you:
Embrace and Celebrate Your Physical Features
Whether you have tattoos, scars, short hair, an afro - don’t change any of your distinguishing features for your wedding day. Ditch the cover-up make-up, extensions and hair tongs and choose clothes and accessories that accentuate these beautiful parts of yourself instead:
Look at the absolutely beautiful Gina Fote and Christian Olliver shot by the very talented Baylie Krutchik - Their stunning tattoos and gorgeous blue hair is perfectly offset by black clothes and veil, my vintage black cameo hair pin and a gorgeous dried flower bouquet. Such a stunning result.
Involve Everyone You Love
Even if it’s unconventional, if someone is important to you and you want them to have a prominent position in your wedding, you should find a way to incorporate them. Even if that someone is a beloved pet, there are ways you can include them, then they’ll be in your wedding photos for the memories. How gorgeous is the little piggy guest in this shot from Ella Farrell? The bride is also sporting my golden rose hair pins that look so pretty in her beautiful ringlets.
Be Bold With Your Colours
Sometimes colours may have sentimental significance: maybe a favourite colour of a lost loved-one or colours from flags or emblems of significant places. Sometimes, they’re just your signature and you shouldn’t shy away from including those colours in your wedding in a big way! Look at these examples of stunning coloured wedding dresses or you could even go all-out with your favourite colour in your hair like the fabulous shade Michelle is sporting with my vintage hair vine:
At the end of the day, it’s your big day so make it your own, make it about you, make it unique!
